Install Gen2Recomp on Windows, Mac and Linux

Windows, Mac and Linux share one Gen2Recomp ZIP, but each system starts it differently. Use the exact launcher below, choose Pokemon Gold or Silver, and let the first setup finish.

  • Create a separate folder where Gen2Recomp can stay after extraction.
  • Back up progress before replacing an older beta version.

Notes for each operating system

Windows

Double-click Play-Windows.bat. On the first run, it checks for Python and the LÖVE game app and may offer to install either through Windows. Read the prompts and never turn off protection for the whole computer.

Mac

Double-click Play-Mac.command. The first run may ask to install Apple command-line tools, Homebrew and the LÖVE game app, and Homebrew can request your Mac password. Approve each prompt only after confirming the current download. If macOS blocks this one starter, use its normal Privacy & Security approval instead of disabling protection for all apps.

Linux

Install Python 3 and LÖVE 11 from your distribution's normal software manager. Then open a terminal in the extracted folder and run scripts/play.sh. Linux does not currently have the same double-click setup as Windows or Mac.

Moving between computers

Copy the complete Gen2Recomp folder only after closing the app. Keep an extra backup of your progress before testing the copied folder on another computer.

After the title screen appears

Later launches normally open the prepared game without asking you to select it again. Before adding mods, walk around, open the menu, enter a battle and create a save. This confirms that the normal game is working.

Update without losing progress

  • Read the latest changes before replacing the old version.
  • Update Dramatic Shapes separately if a new matching file is provided.
  • Test the normal game before turning mods back on.
  • Do not delete the older folder until the new setup is confirmed.
