Gen2Recomp Compatibility

Check which Pokemon games work with Gen2Recomp, what kind of game copy is required, how saves behave, and where compatibility is still uncertain.

Supported Pokemon games

Pokemon Gold and Silver are the main focus of Gen2Recomp. Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow are also supported, so all five games can be kept and played separately.

What happens when you add a supported game

  1. Open Gen2Recomp and choose Gold, Silver, Red, Blue or Yellow.
  2. Select your own legally obtained compatible copy of that game.
  3. Wait while Gen2Recomp prepares it for the first time.
  4. Later launches normally open the prepared game without asking again.

Gold and Silver can take a couple of minutes during the first setup. Red, Blue and Yellow usually finish sooner. Each game keeps its own progress, allowing more than one supported title on the same device.

Save compatibility

Saves created in Gen2Recomp

These are expected to keep working between updates unless a release specifically says otherwise. A backup is still important during beta development.

Saves brought in from elsewhere

A save imported from a cartridge or another app can lose story-event progress. Keep the original untouched and test only a copied save.

Platform compatibility

Windows, Mac, Linux and Android have current tested downloads. There is no ready-to-use iOS or Anbernic download in the current release.

A game that works on one device should still be backed up before being moved or updated. Android and computer storage behave differently, and moving saves between them is not presented as guaranteed until the process is tested in detail.

Mod compatibility

Gen2 Dramatic Shapes is the current Gen2-specific visual extra. Other mods need their own Gold or Silver compatibility statement and test. Do not assume a Gen1Recomp mod works simply because it appears in the manager.

  • Install one mod at a time.
  • Keep a backup before changing the mod list.
  • Test startup, movement, battles and saving after each change.
  • Disable the latest mod first when a new problem appears.
