Default keyboard and controller buttons

Gen2Recomp keeps the familiar Game Boy actions—A, B, Start and Select— but gives each action several convenient keyboard choices. You can change them from Options → Controls.

ActionKeyboardController
MoveArrow keys or WASDD-pad or left stick
A / confirmZ, Enter or SpaceA
B / cancelX or BackspaceB
StartEscapeStart
SelectTab or ShiftBack / Select

Useful keyboard shortcuts

KeyWhat it does
- / =Zoom out or in while walking; the mouse wheel also works.
2Change the colour style.
3Change the world tilt while walking.
4Move through the available zoom levels.
5Change the Game Boy Color-style effect.
F1Save your current Gen2Recomp progress.
F2Load the Gen2Recomp save.
F10Open or close the mod manager.

Tilt and zoom shortcuts work while you are freely walking around. If a shortcut does nothing during a battle or menu, return to the overworld and try again.

What the main visual options mean

Colors

Changes how the original game colours are displayed.

Tilt

Changes the viewing angle of the world, especially with the 3D-style view.

Zoom

Shows more or less of the area around your character.

GBC FX

Adds a Game Boy Color-inspired screen effect.

Void Fill

Changes how empty space beyond the visible map is presented.

Performance

Reduces optional visual extras on slower phones or computers.

Controller setup

  1. Connect the controller before opening Gen2Recomp.
  2. Open Options → Controls.
  3. Test movement, A, B, Start and Select one by one.
  4. Change any reversed or missing button before continuing your save.

If a controller stops responding, close Gen2Recomp, reconnect the controller, and open the app again. Testing without other controller programs running can also help identify a conflict.

Android touch controls

Android uses on-screen controls for movement and the main game buttons. The exact position can differ as the mobile interface changes, so use the labels shown by the current app rather than looking for desktop function keys on the screen.

  • Use the in-app Mods option instead of looking for an F10 key.
  • Open the game menu before changing control or performance settings.
  • Rotate the device only if the current screen remains readable.
  • Test a connected controller from the Controls menu before a battle.
